Ohio Adult Remedial Driving Course

Ohio Remedial Driving Course is a state-approved defensive driving program aimed at improving driver skills and knowledge.  It is an 8-hour driver education program, and you can take it for the following reasons:

  • 2-Point Credit: If you have between 2 and 11 points on your license, this course may apply a 2-point credit, raising your suspension threshold from 12 points to 14. The credit remains valid for three years, and you may use it for this purpose no more than five times in your lifetime.
  • Court-Ordered: If a court has ordered you to take this program, you will not receive a 2-point credit. Instead, your completion certificate is sent directly to the court.
  • Juvenile Suspension: If you are 19 or older and your license was suspended due to an incident that occurred before you turned 18, this course fulfills that requirement.
  • OVI/OVUAC Suspension: If your license was suspended for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol while under the age of 21, this course applies to your situation.
  • 12-Point Suspension: If your license was suspended after accumulating 12 points, completing this course is part of the requirement to become eligible for reinstatement. Your certificate is submitted to the BMV as proof of completion

Is a remedial driving course mandatory, or can I choose to take one voluntarily?

Both situations exist. Courts, DMVs, or licensing authorities may mandate the course as a condition tied to a specific violation or as an alternative to harsher penalties. Alternatively, drivers often take one voluntarily to shave points off their record, qualify for an insurance discount, or simply sharpen their skills after a near-miss or long gap since their last formal instruction.

Will finishing the course actually remove points from my license?

In most jurisdictions, yes — but with caveats. Point reduction is usually capped (commonly one course per 12–18 month period) and only applies if the course is state- or authority-approved. It's worth confirming with your local DMV or transport authority before enrolling, since an unapproved provider won't count.

Who is eligible to take an Ohio remedial driving course?

Eligibility depends on your driving record and the reason for taking the course. Many drivers take it voluntarily to reduce points, while others may be ordered by a court or required by the Ohio BMV. Check your eligibility with the Ohio BMV or your course provider before enrolling.

Can I take the Ohio remedial driving course online?

Yes, many state-approved providers offer the Ohio remedial driving course online. However, you should confirm that the provider is approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and that the online course meets your specific court or BMV requirements.
