CLASS-D DRIVER TRAINING (24-HOUR TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION)

Starting from September 30, 2025, Ohio residents aged 18, 19, and 20 are required to complete the State-approved “Class D” or “Teen Class” course along with 50 hours of driving practice to receive a driver’s license.

If you’re under 21 and want to apply for a driver’s license, you need to complete Class D driver training from an Ohio BMV-approved traffic school, either in person or online.

The Class D course has two parts:

  • 24 hours of in-person or online education covering traffic laws, road safety, and signs.
8 hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction with a licensed instructor.
  • If you’re a temporary resident of Ohio, the BMV requires you to complete this course along with 50 hours of driving practice with a licensed instructor before scheduling a driving test.

If you’ve completed this course, including the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training, you are exempt from taking the Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course, which is otherwise required if you fail your maneuverability or road test.

Who needs to take the Ohio Class D online driver training course?

As of a 2025 law change, 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds are now required to complete the same formal driver's education process that was previously mandatory only for 16- and 17-year-olds. Starting September 30, 2025, Ohio residents aged 18, 19, and 20 must complete the state-approved Class D or Teen Class course along with 50 hours of driving practice to get a license. The course is also required for anyone seeking a Limited Term License, regardless of age.

How many hours does the online course require, and can it be done entirely online?

The classroom portion is 24 hours of online instruction, which satisfies the classroom instruction component of the driver education requirement. However, students also need to enroll in a behind-the-wheel training phase with a driving school of their choosing after completing the online portion ,eight hours of driving with a certified instructor is the standard requirement. So the classroom part is fully online, but hands-on driving hours must be completed in person.

How long do students have to finish the course, and are there daily time limits?

Ohio allows 180 days from the day a student starts to complete the online program. There are also daily caps: students are allowed to complete a maximum of 4 hours of online training per calendar day, and a mandatory 10-minute break is required after every two hours of online learning.

Is there a final exam, and what happens if a student fails it?

Yes. Students must achieve a final written exam score of at least 75% to pass. No more than three attempts to pass the final exam are permitted by the state, and students who don't pass after three tries must retake the classroom program at no cost.
